Feb. 22: Kelley McRae Duo / Young Heirlooms

Music at 7:30 pm - Doors at 7:00 pm
Bikenetic, 922 West Broad St., Falls Church

(NOTE: Due to difficult travel conditions, Young Heirlooms have had to cancel their appearance. Kelley McRae Duo will still perform!)

Kelley McRae grew up in Mississippi but called Brooklyn home for years before teaming up with guitarist Matt Castelein in 2011, when the duo traded in their NYC apartment for a VW camper van and hit the road full time. Thousands of miles and hundreds of shows later, they have toured coast to coast in the US, played to packed rooms across Europe, sold-out the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and continue to build a passionate and dedicated following on the strength of their live performances.

Drawing comparisons to Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, the duo’s music is wide ranging - comprising haunting ballads, tender love songs, and energetic guitar driven songs full of hope. Paste Magazine’s 4 Star review raves “Kelley moves effortlessly from the mournful tones of the plantation to the celebratory swing of the saloon, from songs of loss and decay to hymns of love and grace.” Acclaimed film director Wim Wenders told the San Francisco Chronicle that Kelley’s songs move him to tears, and BBC Radio’s Bob Harris calls the songs ‘brilliant.’

Kelley’s music has been featured in numerous independent films, Lifetime’s Army Wives, MTV and commercials for American Airlines and Unicef.  She has also taken the stage at major festivals such as the Riverbend Festival, Forecastle Music Festival, CMJ, and NXNE.

Young Heirlooms are Kelly Fine and Christopher Robinson, who have been captivating audiences in the Mid-West region for the past three years. Their soaring harmonies have silenced and tamed crowds of varying textures. Focused musicianship shines in every element of their songwriting. Kyle Elkins, upright bass, joined the band in 2013. His ear and technical skill allow for the perfect low end subtlety the duo needed to round out their sound.

Young Heirlooms’ name articulates their style and take on their fusioned genre. Young alludes to the modern spin on the traditional sound of folk music. Heirlooms are items or ideologies handed down from generation to generation. Young Heirlooms’ music has a sound that is handed down from a bygone era, loved for its history, but remains in a new contemporary setting. A mixture of pop-folk and americana songwriting begin to describe the unique style of Young Heirlooms.
